Sustainability
Campus Initiatives
From our healthy menus to the well-being of our consumers and communities, to responsible sourcing and food preparation, as a services provider it is our duty to positively impact natural, social and economic ecosystems wherever we can.

Local Suppliers
We strive to buy local products as much as possible. This year, we've expanded our selections to include Coaticook Ice Cream, Faro Coffee, and fresh vegetables from the Bishop's farm. Supporting local businesses not only ensures quality products but also strengthens our community.
Waste-Watch powered by Lean Path
The WasteWatch powered by Leanpath Program prevents on average 50% of food waste. Using the program, our team can rapidly and easily capture food waste data, giving us clear insights into what is being wasted in our kitchens and why. With this new understanding, we can implement targeted operational and behavioral changes to help end avoidable food waste, whether it is generated in the kitchen or by consumers.
Waste Less Catering
Our team is committed to moving towards a waste-free catering service. We are in the process of transitioning to fully sustainable packaging. Additionally, we will donate our extra food to the community fridge to reduce food waste. By making these changes, we aim to significantly reduce our environmental impact and contribute to a more sustainable future.
Compost
Our compost will now be donated directly to the campus farm. We are committed to this initiative to help reduce our waste and support sustainable agriculture. In return, we will receive locally grown vegetables, further promoting our dedication to environmentally friendly practices.
Bottle Free
Bishop's University is the first Quebec university to ban the sale of single-use bottled water on campus. The "Think Global, Drink Local" campaign began in 2009 and the plan to remove bottled water on campus was successfully implemented for the entry of students in September of 2010.
Trayless
In the past our dining hall supplied guests with trays. We have since removed them in order to decrease energy and water consumption in the dining hall.
Xprss Nap
Xpress napkin holders save 30% in paper over traditional napkin dispensing mechanisms and the napkins are made of 100% recycled paper. These initiatives save enough energy to power 600 American homes for an entire year! More than half a million gallons of oil was saved and 41 tons of pollutants were kept out of the environment.
Recycling
We are committed to consistently producing only a limited amount of garbage. Accordingly, we recycle all plastic, cans, and paper products.
Fair Trade
While we go to great lengths to purchase local supplies whenever possible, we also support fair trade movements – evidenced by the fact that 100% of our coffee on campus, with the exception of the Tim Hortons, is Fair Trade Certified! We have partnered with Van Houtte, allowing us to offer different brands of Fair Trade Certified coffee at Dewhurst Dining Hall and 3 of our retail locations.
