Campus Initiatives

As a guest, it is easy to make smart environmental choices when you dine at a Sodexo café. We know today's college students want to do the right thing for the planet and we also understand you lead busy lives, so your Sodexo chefs and managers do a lot of the work for you behind the scenes!

From purchasing local seasonal produce whenever possible to reducing inorganic and organic waste, your campus team is dedicated to providing you with an exceptional dining experience that is good for you and good for the planet.

Local Suppliers

We work hard to get as many local ingredients as possible. Our professionally trained chefs design our menus to take advantage of the fresh fruits and vegetables that are naturally in season. Approximately 38% of our produce purchases are local products! Some of the items we consistently receive from local providers are: milk, bread, apples, cabbage, carrots and potatoes.

Reusable Cup

The environment and your pocketbook win! When you buy coffee, bring your own mug or thermos and ask for your discount!

Apex

Apex combines technology and products designed to save water and energy, minimize the impact of products on the environment, and has a built-in method of measuring results. Apex products come in a compact solid form that uses 95% less packaging and significantly reduces transportation shipments compared to bulkier liquid detergents.

Equipment

Recent alterations to our kitchen has allowed us to invest in energy efficient equipment.

Bottle Free

Bishop's University is the first Quebec university to ban the sale of single-use bottled water on campus. The "Think Global, Drink Local" campaign began in 2009 and the plan to remove bottled water on campus was successfully implemented for the entry of students in September of 2010.

Trayless

In the past our dining hall supplied guests with trays. We have since removed them in order to decrease energy and water consumption in the dining hall.

Xprss Nap

Xpress napkin holders save 30% in paper over traditional napkin dispensing mechanisms and the napkins are made of 100% recycled paper. These initiatives save enough energy to power 600 American homes for an entire year! More than half a million gallons of oil was saved and 41 tons of pollutants were kept out of the environment.

Composting

Our retail units use compostable take out containers and we compost one hundred percent of food waste.

Recycling

We are committed to consistently producing only a limited amount of garbage. Accordingly, we recycle all plastic, cans, and paper products.

Fair Trade

While we go to great lengths to purchase local supplies whenever possible, we also support fair trade movements – evidenced by the fact that 100% of our coffee on campus, with the exception of the Tim Hortons, is Fair Trade Certified! We have partnered with Van Houtte, allowing us to offer different brands of Fair Trade Certified coffee at Dewhurst Dining Hall and 3 of our retail locations.
